The J2K basketball team, sometimes known as the Bisons, competed in its first tournament over the weekend of April 14th and 15th…and won! Classic Hoops was the 14th annual basketball competition put on by the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce YMCA. J2K competed against five other teams in their division. They took both games they played on Saturday to qualify for semifinals on Sunday. After narrowly winning their semifinal game against the St. Raymond Swift, the J2K team went on to win the weekend, finishing 20 points ahead of their opponents in the finals!

The team got started when Larry Williams, a pro player, approached J2K Coordinator Neil, wanting to give back. Williams had been to some camps and played some ball in the States, and noticed that Canadian players often weren’t competing on the same level as US players. He was interested in teaching youth fundamentals of the game to bring up the level of the sport in Canada. In fall 2011, youth began training at J2K during open gym three times a week. A closed team practice on Monday afternoons was added when the City granted J2K an extra gym day–with this win, we can see the payoff of the team’s investment in training!
