Faggity Ass Fridays: Sex ed on the dance floor!

Intern poses on table holding anonymous sex-ed questions.

UQAM Sexology intern Shanna poses with some of the questions anonymously asked last Faggity.

This week on the blog we’re shining the spotlight on Faggity Ass Fridays, our queer monthly dance party that raised over $22, 000 last year for the Sense Project. If you like what you read, we hope you’ll come out and groove with us this Friday!

Since its inception in 2007, the Sense Project has reached thousands of Montreal youth with reliable, approachable information on safer sex and sexuality.  Now it’s set to reach even more, by bringing sex ed to the dance floor at Faggity Ass Fridays!

“There are pamphlets, condoms, lube and dental dams available when you come into the event, but we’re taking it to another level,” says Shanna, the UQAM Sexology intern who is heading up the project.  At each event, Shanna will collect anonymous sexual health questions and post answers in washrooms at the following event. “Restrooms during parties can be independent environments from the parties themselves where a lot of stuff can go on,” says Shanna. “They also give the opportunity to take a breather, refresh, and exchange.”

Shanna will also be available during the party to answer questions, encouraging “folks to dare to ask the one question they wouldn’t ask anyone else about sexuality.” So far, Shanna says, party goers have been up for it: “It’s a pleasure to see peoples’ eyes light up knowing that they have the possibility to ask anything, and get sex positive and real answers.”

Up next? A drag king performance, and some special sex-ed workshops, just for Faggity Ass Fridays. “We want folks to know that sex ed is not just available in schools, but that it can be available everywhere and that it can be fun,” Shanna explains. We couldn’t agree more!

ATTENTION PARTY PEOPLE: Faggity Ass Fridays, Montreal’s longest-running queer dance party, is moving venues!  On January 31st, come celebrate the rebirth of Faggity Ass Fridays at our new location, Il Motore!

New year, new location— this month, everything is new.

However, some things never change. As always, all donations collected at the door go directly to the Sense Project, Head & Hands’ holistic, sex-positive, and queer-friendly sex education program. We’ll still be on the dance floor, sweating and shaking it to make sure Montreal youth get the sex education they deserve.

Spotlight on music programming at J2K!

on

TIME V$ MONEY

Over the past few months, the home away from home for NDG youth has become a music magic shop!  Teens can drop into J2K on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays for an amazing range of musical activities – from jam sessions, to beat-making, to voice recording, to learning new instruments… or even just hanging out and meeting new people.  Everyone is welcome!

On Mondays and Thursdays, come join the Musikaddict crew to play and learn about improvised music.  We’ve got an amazing library of instruments to play with – from keys, bass, guitar, and drums to violin and berimbau and many more.  Our professional (and patient!) instructors Ari and Julie love welcoming new people… they’ll have you writing your own songs within a month of touching your first instrument.  And on Thursdays, we order pizza or cook food together while jamming!

On Mondays and Tuesdays, join Frase in the studio to take advantage of our amazing all-new equipment donated through a MusiCounts TD Community Music Grant!  We’ve got an amazing range of new instruments and technology to make beats, write tracks, record vocals and more.  If you can imagine it, Frase can help you produce it.  Take a look at the video above to see what’s possible at the J2K studio, and then come visit us yourself to add your own flavour!
