About the Director of Funding & Development position

The Director of Funding & Development (DFD) shares responsibility for the financial viability of Head & Hands and is a core member of the administrative team. The DFD leads the organization’s efforts in acquiring, retaining and upgrading gifts from individual donors, government grants, family foundations, and other funding bodies. The position supervises and collaborates with the Media & Communications Coordinator.

Responsibilities include

1. Development 

  • Lead donor acquisition, retention, communication strategies, and upgrading efforts
  • Lead staff and board involvement in organization’s fundraising activities; provide fundraising training to staff and board as needed 
  • Oversee donations processing and donor recognition, ensuring that donors are properly thanked and recognized (e.g. tax receipts, thank you cards) 
  • Oversee donation database and ensure donor records are well maintained

2. Fundraising Campaigns and Events 

  • Oversee fundraising campaigns
  • Send at least two donor mailouts each year 
  • Liaise with third party fundraisers
  • Oversee and/or plan fundraising events as needed

3. Funding

  • Oversee and deepen private foundation relationships 
  • Research and evaluate new funding opportunities 
  • Maintaining, reporting, and renewing government grants and private foundation funding
  • Attend funding meetings / conferences as needed, advocating for organizational interests
  • Planning, writing, and editing of funding applications
  • Work with Executive Director to ensure programs are reporting to the admin team on activities regularly, and communicate effectively when amendments are needed for grants
  • Work with the Executive Director on creating statistical reporting systems for programs

4. Public relations and outreach  

  • Support and collaborate with Media & Communications Coordinator on traditional and social media strategies
  • Contribute to the voice of the organization via social media, website, and other communications avenues 

5. Human Resources 

  • Supervise and oversee Media & Communications Coordinator position 
  • Supervise interns/contract staff as needed 

6. Administration 

  • Create, implement, and evaluate the annual fundraising action plan with Executive Director and Director of Finance
  • Work with Director of Finance to ensure sound financial administration of all projects managed (e.g. budgets, deposits, follow up and reporting) 
  • Support Media & Communications Coordinator, Executive Director, and Board of Directors with Annual Report and AGM planning as needed

7. Collective duties 

  • Participate in staff meetings and team retreats 
  • Supervise 0-2 permanent staff members as needed 
  • Attend and support Head & Hands events 
  • Contribute to annual budgeting process
  • Contribute to policy work and take part in internal committees 
  • Provide front desk replacement and contribute to building coverage
  • Assist in the maintenance of Head & Hands (ie. Spring Cleaning, recycling) 
  • Represent Head & Hands as needed 

Requirements:

·         Fluently bilingual (English and French), both oral and written

·         Knowledge of NationBuilder, G Suite, Microsoft Office, WordPress, SurveyMonkey, Adobe Suite

·         A commitment to harm reduction and anti-oppression principles

·         Active listening skills

·         Excellent time-management and organizational skills

·         Ability to work autonomously

·         Commitment to Head & Hands mission and approach

·         Experience working in a collaborative team setting
